"When She's Gone"

April 2007
This addresses my "brother", Scott, after he and Ira (our German exchange student in 2006/2007) got together. The two of them are among my favourite people on earth, and I feel as a sibling to both of them, and totally love that they're in love. I was really sad that Ira having to go home was going to keep them apart, but Scott and I went to visit her in October 2007 and she's coming here again soon, and we plan on hanging out in Eurome together over the summer.

What are you going to do when she’s gone, boy?
What will you do when she’s gone?

You might wander the roads at night in your car
pretending she’s there when she’s really far gone.
That CD on repeat; a new song, a new street,
and like the songwriter says, you’ll sail on.

I hope you’ll pull through it and take her advice:
“Try not to miss me,” though it makes your heart fall.
But I think you’re prepared – I saw you say it:
“It’s better to have loved and lost than never loved at all.”

And I hope that things don’t sour between you.
I hope your dried flowers don’t fade.
I hope they stay bright as your headlights at night,
and I hope that she’ll come back someday.

Maybe when you’re alone, you will sing along:
“I wish you were here with me when I’m sailing on.”
Their strings will soothe your heart like yours once did mine,
and remind you of love – not that she’s gone.

Is that what you’ll do when she’s gone, my friend?
What will you do when she’s gone?
